Need help locating bumper mounting holes

I'm backdating my 1975 bumpers to earlier style...

I need help locating the bolt through-holes for my earlier style bumpers.

It's easy enough for the front because I can visualize the thread holes through the foglight openings.

In the rear, it's a different story.

Can some one send me a photograph, or diagram with accurate dimensions off of the major landmarks on the backside of the car?

Thanks,

Karl, do it the easier way: Look at where the reinforcements are.

In the front fenders, you should see some reinforcements with flat spots for the holes. They're up at the front edge of the fender, below the turn signal buckets.

In the rear, look inside the rear trunk. You'll see reinforcements for the upper mounting bolt holes. You'll have to pull the muffler to see the ones for the lower bolt holes.

Dave:

I checked... no such "reinforcements" could be found per-se. I looked in the trunk under the light housings, in the corner, and underneath the car behind the rear section and the muffler... nothing.

I'm thinking I could just but some dowels in the bolt holes with some grease pencil gooped on the ends. Line up the bumper so all apears straight and press into the rear section.

Also Figure 10.11 in the Hayne's manual appears to be a pretty good indication of the location.

I think between the Hayne's manual, measuring the spacing of the bolt holes on the actual bumper, and the stick method, I should be able to get it 99.9% correct.

If someone can just send me a digital photo of their back end (Don't go there Brad!) close up with the bumper removed that would help to cinch it.

Regards,

At one time the rear tail panel was replaced on my 75. The replacement piece had the holes for the earlier style bumber mounts. What I noticed was the upper holes were in the middle of the trunk floor.

The later bumper trunk floor raises up on the left and right side to clear the bumper struts mounts. This puts the floor of the trunk in the same location as the upper earlier mounting holes. Unlike the front there is no provision for the earlier mounting locations, the late models used a different design in the rear. The only way I can see back dating a steel bumper would be to cut and clearance the locations needed in the trunk floor. In addition to the floor sheet metal there is the heavy gauge mounts for the original bumper struts that may or may not need to be clearanced.

Sorry I don't have any measurements for you but I thought I would try to give you a heads up of what I noticed. I am back dating with a fiberglass bumper and forming it to the body.

The pic here is from Mueller's 75, which was the victim of one of the Sawz-All Parties. I believe that the smaller holes are the ones to mount the early bumpers.

karl, if you can wait until i get my distributor back, i'll drive over and we can take my bumper off and have a look.

if not, maybe you can make a template of the back of the bumper, (width/height) with holes where the bolts go. then line it up and center it on the body to mark the holes.

Between everything I think I can figure it out.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I'm now just concerned about the floor pain heighth per roadtrp's post. It concerned me too upon closely checking the car out.

Thanks
