E-brake handle

Can someone please tell me: (1) How the black plastic grip portion of the e-brake handle is attached to the metal structure, and (2) How/if it can be removed from the metal structure without destroying either?

Sorry, this you migh already know. About all I've been able to do is pull the button and rod out of the handle to clean it. The plastic I think is either pressed on or is on there with some sort of epoxy. Either way the 25 year old plastic will probably break if you remove it.
