Engine" Hunts"-Why?
My '71 1.7 D-jet "hunts" at idle. It jumps to about 2000 rpm, then drops to less than 1000, then back to 2000. Any one know where I should look first?

From what I remember, hunting is caused by a too lean mixture, probably a vacuum leak or two. Good luck.

my 2.0 did that. I don't know the name of the part, but it has a cap that can be drilled out to reach an adjustment screw for the mixture. that seemed to fix mine. not even sure if the 1.7 has the same part.

Too lean a idle mixture caused by vacuum leaks. I don't think on a 71 1.7L the ECU has the adjustment knob.
Check hoses, injector seals, TB seal, manifold gaskets etc. You can test with a spray can of starting fluid, spray a small amount at hose connections, injectors, etc. When you spray, if that is the leak the engine will rev up. Stop and fix that spot then move on to the next. I said a SMALL amount too. If you spray all over the place tons of fluid, the engine will inhale it and rev up giving you false readings Also, starting fluid is flammable so be careful. DO NOT drill the end of the MPS to adjust for this problem. You could also check to see if the FI parts match ie the CHT, ECU, MPS per Brad's site: http://www.members.rennlist.com/pbanders Go to the FI pages to find the table of parts with the part numbers for given years.
