OT-How much do you pay for internet?

I have AT&T Cable, and I just got a bill for $107 for 6 weeks of service. Seems like the cost/benefit ratio is changing (for me at least). Any cable/high-speed internet available that is not so expensive?

why is yours so much? I have attbi also and pay $49.95 month for two computers. are you sure there isn't something else hidden in your bill?

If you want to be cheap get http://www.NoCharge.com for free Internet. Speeds run 45-56k.
I have cable at the house on 3 computers, costs $49 per month.

At least I found something cheaper over here in the North. We usually pay $39.95 CDN ( around $25 US ) for ADSL high speed, uncluding the modem.

Do you have at & t digital cable/tv ? My old company did this to me, also. I had digital cable, and later added the high speed cable modem connection. The intial dig. cable was 40 bucks a month. Then add highspeed Internet access at 40, then add cable box rental, cable modem rental, and a goddam remote rental; not to mention installation fees. Mine was 90 a month, but I had a bunch of movie channels, and the fastest speed available.

Is this your first bill? If so, it should lower soon. If not, call and upgrade your service. You usually keep the plan you already have, but pay less. You should also do it with cell phone company. Every 2 years those companies are supposed to notify you of upgrades in service plans. Meaning your plan is "lower grade", but you still pay more for service started 2 years prior. Get it?

BTW, did the cable guy have to open up your computer to add a slot for the CAD 5 line (bigger "phone" looking cable)? If they did, more fees, about 20 bucks for cable/DSL card slot thingy.

Man! I could make payments on a complete home theater system for what some of you guys are paying. (But then what would I hook it up to?)

I am just comming to the end of a three year contract with Compuserve at about $22 a month. But they gave me a computer for $75 (500mhtz-Celeron, not much but it works). Yes, dial ups are slow as hell, but I get no spam or viruses.

Now, Direct TV wants me to use their satelite connection. I already have thier sat TV. Anyone use this? I don't even know what they charge.

At the office I have a dedicated T1 (not DSL) with 13 static IP's, $499/month. Used to pay about $1500 for the same service (different ISP)...a little new competition and belt-tightening in the telecom world since then.

At the house I have the DirecWay (satellite) service that Milt mentioned. It is a two-way dish that runs at about a 2GHz frequency. The download speed is fine, varies quite a bit but usually 400Kbps to > 1500Kbps. The upload is basically dial-up speed. There is a lot of latency compared to land-lines, because the birds are WAY up there. I think the service is $69/mo after the equipment is paid for. Not nearly an optimal solution but it's all we can get there - PacHell doesn't offer DSL in our area and Adelphiastealfromya Cable doesn't offer data service. Anything significantly better jumps to $700/month.

Wow. Based on what everyone else is paying, I must have a fantastic deal. I pay 32.95 a month for cable modem service at the house. They gave me a free cable modem when I signed up as well.

This ISP (Eureka-GGN) has a unique approach. They wire up an entire office building with Cat5e (on their dime), drop in a Cisco switch and as many circuits as they need to fill the bandwidth requirements of their contracts in that building. that's still a great deal chris. a T1 with local loop and cisco 2500 was over $12k/month where I used to work back in '96 - '97! this was from the top provider out there, but still crazy expensive.

Sprint Broadband (they won't do any new accounts anymore), $45 a month. No setup fee. Hooked up a firewall/router to the "modem" and a hub. I can put as many boxes as I want on it (every room in the house wired with cat5 drops (multiple in some rooms)).

I maintain a $20 a month dial up (nationwide local access numbers) for road trips with the laptop.

T1 at work.

No wonder I can't get any "work" done.

Damn, that is wild. Are you talking about cage space at a co-lo though? My setup is in my office, regular class-A bldg, no cooling, power or security infrastructure. They are managed circuits and boxes though, watched remotely 24x7 from net ops.

Co-lo space in LA is still quite spendy. I think my bro-in-law was paying like $3500/month for 2 or 3 fairly small servers at Level3.

phone line. net zero $9.95 a month. free with limited usage. no pop ups. no problems (so far). if i had to use one that advertises big time on tv i would'nt bother. i'm just cheap.
