MSD, new coil and ignitor. Well I just finally my msd 6a, blaster coil and pertronix ignitor installed. What a difference. It is about -15c here today and it starts as soon as I think about touching the key! I can notice a big difference in power and smoothness. Overall a well spent 250$ from the local buy/sell. That's exactly what I'm using. Haven't got to try it yet. But alot of people I talked to have confidence in the setup. Later on, I might get the Mallory. BTW, Crane makes a CD like the MSD for a little less moolah. |

That's the same setup I use on the big 4 racecar engine. It has been great for 4 years now and shows no sign of stopping. I get 15000 volts at the plug at idle and close to TRIPLE that at 6000 RPM! I bought a Snapon secondary voltage tester so I can troubleshoot ignition problems since my multi meter does not go that high. |

What is this msd 6a, blaster coil and pertronix ignitor??? Is it for stock engines? How do I find out more? I'd like to have one. bruce |

Bruce, the MSD 6a unit is a multiple spark/capacitance discharge ingition module. It supplies around 400v to the coil instead of 12v which means a higher voltage/hotter spark. It also fires multiple sparks over 20 degres of crank rotation to burn all the air/fuel mixture. The blaster coil is just a high output coil and the pertronix ignitor will replace your points and condensor with an electronic module. I think all the stuff new would be around $450us, but I found some good deals on e-bay and in the local buy/sell. I got every thing for around $175us. Very easy to install, but you must get the MSD tach adaptor. www.msdignition.com ,Dave |

One more thing.., My engine is a stock 1.8L, so yes it is for stock engines, Dave |

While your at it....the Unilite distributor can't be beat for this application also..;) ;) |

To complete the systems use a MSD distributor and plug the 6 Al directly into the distributor. Use MSD wires as MSD is picky on the kind of plug wires, Summit sell both plug sets and distributors. (They're sold as VW parts) |

ANY C/D unit will be an improvement over the stock ignition, plus if you do stay points, they will not wear out (except mechanically). I put an MSD unit into my 6 (which had a CD unit already) and with the carbs it is better in the low rpm zone. Remember, above. 3000 rpm, there will be only 1 spark per cycle. MSD only helps from about 2500 and DOWN.... James |
