Front engine mounts
 

Hi everyone,

My '76 2.0 was equipped by the P.O. with non-standard front engine mounts. In the holes above the mountings, there is a metal bar. The bolt goes through a hole in this, and through the arm bolt hole of the mount.

Last week I got stock replacements from Pelican. My problem is that I can't find a pic or description of how the stock piece attaches; it's too short to go all the way through the arm with the rubber piece on top.

Can someone provide a bit of illumination?

I cant help until you show me a pic of what you got from Pelican.

Your description of the cross bar had me scratching my head.

I'm sorry, I wish I could do a better job of explaining. Heres what I got:

Right now there is a bolt without any rubber going through the motor mounting bar. The bolt attaches to the car frame by going up through a large round hole, where there is a metal bar that goes across the hole. The bolt rests on this bar. The top of the bolt is at the top of the mount, and the nut (and a large washer) is below the motor mounting bar.

Maybe I'm just confused on how this piece mounts; I've never seen a stock mount before and there doesn't seem to be many pics of these around.

On the 73 and newer models those are the correct mounts. They connect to the negine and then to the bar in the middle where the engine sits on the bar. The mounts that you got are the correct ones for your year, but what I suspect you are looking for are the old style that go on the ends of the engine mount, and are rubber. Your set up is correct if the engine mount ends are solid mounted by bolts to the body, with a mettal cross piece. It is the differance between the two set ups. Check where your engine mounts to the bar and see if you can still use those any way if yours are worn. They wont work at all on the ends.:)

Im not sure if your question got answered, but here goes..The mounts that you have in the picture, mount the engine to the the bar. They are located right under the engine.

What you appear to be explaining though is the end of the engine bar where it mounts to the chasis. The bar at the end is mounted to the chasis up through that large hole by a bolt which attaches to a cross piece of metal bolted to the outside of the big hole.

If you need replacement parts for this let me know, I just replaced mine and can tell you what and where to get them.

I'll look for that next time, and thanks for deciphering my question. I really could not find much in the way of explanations of how the engine mounting works, and I though it was odd to have the engine mount bolts hitting metal to metal. But since there's rubber where the mounting bar meets the engine itself, I guess that solves that.

those rubber isolators or mounts attach thru the two small holes on the center of the bar and then to brackets behind the fan housing bolted to the front of the engine. the second picture shows a bent solid OUTBOARD mount.

I was thinking that the outboard attachment looked like kind of a kludge, and maybe was done by a PO. Why is the hole in the chassis that big (the one that the bar goes across)?

The early car had "rubber" mounts at the end of the bar (biguns) and afforded the vibration isolation.

When they changed the mounting system, they didn't change the body - so the holes were left big.

Call the toll-free number and tell them you ordered the wrong parts by mistake. Should be no hassles.

I would first check the rubber mounts on your car to make sure they're OK--who knows, you might need the new mounts anyway??
