One of the cars my father and I built

He sold it several years ago, but nothing much has changed on it.

Note the 914 150mph speedo and the 914 rear disc brake setup on it (guess who gave him those pieces ??) LOL

Click here to see pics of the vehicle

The car was on the cover of the Jan 1992 issue of Hot Vw's magazine and then featured again on the 1993 Hot Vw's calender. This is where I started in V8 conversions.

Good Lord! I think that one qualifies as a "full custom".

Ditto on the coolness..... I've always loved suicide doors. I don't know why the cars of today don't sport them more. Egress is so much easier too... especially to those that grunt every now & then when emerging! (guess I'm showing my age)

I'll never understand Ebay. How can the winning (high) bid be placed at 7:44 before two other bids of less but later at 7:46 & 7:47? this happened to me on the only time I ever bid on anything on EvilBay and I lost to a higher bid placed before mine. If I had known, of course, I would have bid more. I have sworn not to ever patronize that goat-rope operation ever since.

Zeke,

As crazy as it is to do it that way, I think what happened is the guy who won set his high bid higher than those last two bidders, so they were instantly outbid by the him because his high bid was higher than theirs, and the timestamp was from his original bid.

Definitely agree with the "goat-rope operation". That place is nuts.

Yep. Its called proxy bidding.

I place a bid of 8k on something and you dont see it. You bid and bid away wondering why I keep outbidding you. Until you go over 8k I will always win the bid. People who dont use ebay often have a hard time understanding this. I like it. I put in the max amount I want to pay for something and let people bid away. If I get outbid by what I would have paid..no biggie. The thing that does make me mad: Snipers. People who use E-snipe.

This was pretty cool:

My dad bought a worn out Recaro and split it down the center to make a bench seat.

Your strategy is good, but for maximum effectiveness, you should do it via sniping instead of doing it early in the auction. Why? Because there are so many numbskulls out there who are addicted to Ebay and will compulsively bid up an item that has a high (and likely reasonable) pending bid on it until they outbid. You see it happen all the time, because the item gets re-listed. If you snipe your bid in at the last minute, you don't give them any time to make idiots of themselves and you get the item for a reasonable price.

Didn't you see those two idiots who bid over $2200 for a 914 Saratoga top?

I got sniped on a car I wanted... I'm now a big fan. I think EBAY is great. Great to watch other people pay way too much for something. Great to get rid of something that other people wont pay for....

Thanks PB on the car. It was a lot fun driving it (when he let me)

Funny story (short) Dad is driving down the freeway in the vehicle pictured and decides to pass somebody, gets on the gas and the throttle sticks on the twin 4 barrels... he quickly shuts the car off and realizes that we replaced the VW column with a GM tilt column and that the steering is now locked semi to the left... he put the car into the guard rail at 80+ mph. Kinda just ran it against it until he got the car stopped. This was before it was painted.

He won best engineered at almost all the VW shows he attended in SoCal and Texas.

Randy,

even though the top was chopped 4 inches, there was plenty of room for 3 people. Its started life as a 67 type 3 FASTBACK (not station wagen like they wrote up) these 67 VW's just barely had any seatbelts back then.
