water leaks

Whenever my 76 2.0 gets caught in a
serious downpour I find the footwells
filling up with water. Anybody have
any idea where the water is getting
in?

My 75 has it coming in from under the cowl. I guess the front hood seal is bad. Look under the M/C resivior and above the driver side speaker.

Next place is the rear window, notorious for leaking, this is what killed the floors on my '72.

If it comes in from puddles then look at the front corners of the floor pans, the wheel spins the water right in, on my '74 it was so bad that if I went through a puddle the wrong way a stream of water would shoot across the car and hit me in the eye! No joke, although it was quite amusing to the passenger at the time.

Thanks for the tips. I believe it is coming from under the cowl as you suggested.
Fortunately it is only the carpets and not my
person that is getting drenched as of yet.

Just remember that your "person" won't rust!
Wet carpets can destroy floorboards in short order. Another thing to be concerned about is water getting into the center tunnel. It's not easy rustproofing that area, or even drying it out.

Sounds like you have found the source of your leak. One other spot to check is the hole into the front trunk that the radio antenna cable comes thru from the fender well. If it is not sealed your tire will convey water into a well around the fresh air vent tube that exits over the pedal area.

Thanks to all for the tips. The hole for the antenna cable sounds like another prime suspect as I removed the antenna a long time ago for the paint job and have yet to replace it.
