Conversion???

I'm always seeing people converting their 914 to a v8 or a porsche-6, has anyone ever used a chevy corvair motor? I've seen it done with a Vw bus..Anyone??

It has been done, but I think it's a bit too much of a pain to bother with.

The engine rotates the other way. You can rebuild it with a "reverse cam" to get it to spin the same way. Or if you have a pre-73 914 you can hunt up a 911 transmission and swap over the shifter bits from your 914 transmission.

The Corvair motors are not that easy to find nowadays, nor are they all that cheap when you do.

The aspirated ones are not that powerful, the turbo'd ones were somewhat underengineered. And that pesky fan belt is their Achilles' heel...

Well, they're a dime a dozen here in tx. I know a few guys here in town with complete motors for under $300. They are quite strange with that 90 degree belt set-up but the motors are nice and torquey. I bet if there was one in a 914, it would be pretty darn quick...I was just asking this question because the conversion would probably be alot cheaper than a porsche 6 conversion.
