Alt. lite with brakes on

Okay its a 72 and I installed a new Optima red top battery. Drove the car today with the top off, weather was great here today, Portland Oregon. First stop I came to, step on the brakes, Alt. lite glows, tach goe's dead and radio turns off. I let off of the brake and the Alt. lite goe's out and the tach works and radio comes back on, same thing is repeated each time I step on the brakes.
I noticed that after I drove the car for a short period that the alt. lite was glowing dimly at idle and even when reved up.
One thing that did happen when installing the battery is that a spark jumped when I was tightening the Positive side and my wrench hit the car body.
Any ideas.
TIA Craig C. Laughlin

Check the 4th or 5th fuse from the right as it is either loose or blown. I controls all sorts of things. Good luck.

That would be #9 fuse. That's what was wrong with my last alt light issue.

Bruce Good morning. Maybe we did pass, you were just going faster because of all those steroids that you are pumping up your punkin with??=B^)
Actually I was taking the white 72 back to CAMP 914 and picking up another one for rejuvenation. A 74 2.0 , blue/black, nice car.
I saw the gauge you are looking for on a previous posting. I have one if interested. Let me know.

Tryan,
I have never understood why the negative lead should be removed first and connected last. Can you tell me why?

'Cause when you hit the wrench on a metal part of the car (it WILL happen) it won't create a welder if it is on the negative terminal.

Good question,

Removing and replacing the positive cable on the battery sends voltage spike to the diodes in the alternator. This is hard on the alternator causing premature failure of the diodes.

Removing and replacing the negative cable first is much gentler to the alternator and is far less surprising (sparky)

WOHOOO, drinks all around. The fuse was the problem, Replaced started the engine and no alt. lite.
Thanks to all who replied.

That was exactly my reaction when I fixed it with a fuse instead of replacing an alernator.
