Dogbone inner structure?

What's inside a 'dogbone' early 914 footrest. I have one I would like to clean of surface dirt and grease but dont want to risk soaking an inner structure that shouldnt get wet. How would you guys clean this thing? Thanks.

I clean mine just like I do my rugs or valour seats with shampoo
seems to work for me, Just make sure you let it dry out well.
