901 Sideshift Pricing

Hi Guys, Anyone have an idea what the going rate is for a sideshifter tranny? Might buy a spare if the price is right. Thanks.

I'm going to say anywhere from $200 to $1000 depending on how "fresh" it is terms of condition. If recently rebuilt or largely rebuilt closer to the higher price. A known core may be less than $200 if you want to pull it apart, inspect, refresh, reseal, etc. Buy Dr. Evil's DVD and learn how to pull it apart (but you'll only get so far without a special tool or two).

Beatnavy, Thanks for the help. I consider his box a core. If I can get it on the cheap, maybe I'll tear it apart and see how it works.

The cost depends on several things: how "fresh is it", is it stock geared, does it have a limited slip, does it have a lube system, what lube was run in it and how was it treated. If it is a stock box you can get an idea of it's condition by draining the lube through several paint filters to see what shows up and then try wiping the bottom of the case to see what sort of goop comes out. In the San Diego area a rebuilt stock box will be several thousand, a racing box with M-S-X gears and limited slip can run up to 6 to 8 thousand dollars depending on who built it!

I think this is a stock box he has had laying around for years. I don't think it's anything special. It's probably a good idea to see if it has limited slip. That would be nice. Is there any way of knowing the gears other than disassembly? Thanks.

Knowing the condition of the gears? Not really. You need to remove the tail cone and gear stack to inspect more than 1st and reverse. You can replace seals, inspect the gears, and replace 1st / reverse components as needed, clean, and reseal. To actually replace gear components on 2nd through 4th you need a couple of special tools to tear down the gear stack.
