914 Ignition switch problem?

I have a 1970 Porsche 914. How far must the ignition switch key move before the starter engages? My key travels about a half revolution before the engine cranks. Sometimes it cranks fast enough to start and many times it turns so slowly that I have to try several times before it starts.

This is a very common symptom among 914's that could have several well-known root causes. The ignition switches fail (not "if" but "when"). The ground strap between tranny and trunk bottom is missing or making a bad connection. Other connections, ground or hot, are dirty or not making good contact somewhere in the circuit. The starter or solenoid could also finally be failing.

In answer to your actual question, I don't know - maybe a 1/4 turn? I do know that after replacing my failed ignition switch with the crappy, cheap version that is widely available I have to make sure I turn the key and put pressure on it just right to complete the circuit. And that's with a hot start relay installed.

The plastic part of the switch might be cracked. I always thought it was probably the same part as they used in Super Beetles.

I just purchased and installed a new starter, new battery, new cables, and new ground cables. The ignition switch for the 1970 model doesn't have the white plastic plug in, it is a circular wire connection.

My 73 turns less than 1/4

So to be clear is the physical movement that is 1/2 revolution ?

If so my thought would be something is loose or broken

Yes, the physical movement is a 1/2 revolution.

Another problem I am having is trying to get the key out of the ignition, it is very difficult to get it out.

you need to change the switch now while you can still get the key in and out .
Once you cant do that changing it is more difficult.

Thanks.
