Lug nut types

Hey guys, what is the lug nut material of choice with the board?

I have done a 4-5 lug conversion and am not sure if the aluminum ones I have will cut it?? They seem like the threads will strip right out. I planed on using them to pull my studs into my rear hubs.

Thanks

Oh ya..It is a street only car, as of now :)

I would use the steel lug nuts to pull them in. You stand a chance of blowing the ends out of your aluminum lug nuts.

Steel are required by many/most race organizations. You (i.e. the tech inspectors) can visually see whether you have enough thread engagement. They are strong. And you don't need those fancy "soft sockets" like you do if you don't want to trash the expensive alloy nuts.

Thanks..

Does anyone out in Pelican land have a ugly spare STEEL lug hanging around? :)

I need one to pull my studs into the hubs. I can mail it back if you are attched to it.

Thanks

I have some Empi ones. I you want them they're yours. Send me an email with you address and I will send them to you. If needed they will also work on factory wheel, they have the ball style seat.

If you are using the steel lug nut only to pull in the studs, couldn't you just use a standard hex nut with washers as required? Then use the alloy lug nuts for your wheels? Just wondering...

I was thinking the same thing. I guess if I could find a nut with the same thread type it should work.

Lets see if anyone adds to this..

One source would be a late VW bus/ Vanagon. They had 14mm studs with steel lug nuts.

Get a couple of nuts from a salvage yard and use you aluminum ones for the wheels.

You may also be able to get 14mm (I forget the pitch) generic lug nuts for pulling the studs in from a FLAPS. By 2 or 3 in case the threads start to gall from pulling in the studs in. Worth checking.

14mm x 1.5

This may be a dumb question BUT..

If you can buy lugs that fit porsche studs from the FLAPs, why do people pay $50-$60 for a set of PORSCHE lug nuts?

Aren't they much cheaper at the the FLAPS??

I'll check the ZONE out after work tonight, 14x1.5.

On the stud length. If I am adding 21mm spacers do I just buy studs that are 21mm longer then the stock length studs?

Thanks:D

I use Chevrolet truck lug nuts on 100mm studs for my race cars.

Very cheap from FLAPS.

Most (if not all) Porsche wheels are designed to use a ball type seat on the lug nuts. many other automotive companies use a straight taper seat. Some have a flat seat where the washwer sits. You can't mix and match, they will either gall or work loose. I should have checked my chebby truck lug nuts before I sold it :-)

(I'm sure that if Brad is using a different type of lug nut seat he is also using a different type of wheel).

When I was in parts I crossed everything I could. The last body style chevy trucks use 14mm studs (I think 3/4 ton 4X4 '89-98). The threads as I remember are 14X1.5 as mentioned earlier. Empi aslo has 14mm studs and steel nuts with ball seats for use in off road type stuff.

Why spent the money on Porsche lugs, as far as I know they are the only easy source for aluminum ball seat nuts. Steel ball seat open nuts are a different story.

Your good. I use 3/4 Chevy truck.

If research is done, many things from the common world can be sourced for our cars. Funny how the Mallory distributor is such a popular choice now. Check out the date when I first posted on its use. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-914-914-6-technical-forum/1336-2-0l-fi-2-2l-webers.html?highlight=mallory
