FI system compatability....
Will a 76 2.0L complete FI system fit on earlier years (73-74)? I would only need the same 3 stud intake port, correct?
THX in advance... |
If you are placing it on a '73 or '74 2.0L, then yes, but if it is a 1.7 or 1.8 (1974) the sheet metal is different as the spark plugs are in different locations.
Do you have a California 2.0L FI system. If so, it may have some additional stuff on it that may rob it of power as compared to rest of state 2.0L systems (Cat converter, air pump ports in the cylinder heads, more restrictive exhaust). Regards, |
All '75-'76 cars have air pumps, regardless of CA model or not. The only difference is that the CA cars have the cats and EGR.
The '75-'76 2.0 cars also have a different ECU part number than the '73-'74 2.0 cars. I remember that when the ECU on my '76 packed it in, I could _not_ use a '73-'74 ECU, I had to get the proper '75-'76 ECU. My car is a 49 state car and it doesn't have the cat. Aaron |
I more or less just want to know. Knowledge is power, huh.
Thanks guys... |
The 76 FI will work fine on any 2.0L car as long as you use the matching parts.
The 73 2.0L is an odd ball system since it uses the same ECU a 1.7L. Thus it has the different CHT sensor with the ballast resistor and different MPS. Aaron, I don't see any reason a 76 ECU wouldn't work fine in a 74 car as they are very similar. Geoff |
The only reason I can think of that it wouldn't work is that the later thermo-time switch (I think it is) requires another wire that is powered by the ECU.
There might have been one other difference in the wiring and such... Mind you, there is a difference between "fits and runs" and "fits and works completely correctly". --DD |

'76 ECU also has over-run shut-off, the '73 and '74 ECU's do not. The speed control circuit is also different, it has one more or less (can't remember) waveform generator. Check out my web page on ECU's for differences and compatability of components.
