Things needed for electronic ignition
MSD or Crane? What do you need to buy in order to do this? What are the advantages? Disadvantages?

Hey Chris, I just installed a Pertronix Ignitor tonight. Was one of the easiest installs I've done yet (besides the vacuum hose replacement). Didn't even have to take the dizzy out. Just went to the FLAPS and picked one up for $69.99. What a difference!
I was never able to get the car timed properly and now I can dial it in with those nice little timing marks moving extremely smooth instead of jumping around. Haven't driven it yet cause it's raining quite heavily but, hopefully, I'll get it out tomorrow morning. These electronic ignitions should be a prerequisit! bruce

What is the difference between a Pertronix and a MSD unit? Pertronix just fits inside the dizzy, where MSd's/Crane have a whole separate unit.

Chris, you are confusing the issue. MSD units need a coil and points to work. You can substitute magnectic or optical devices for the points. Same with the Crane. Where it gets confusing, is that Crane makes both. A lot of people use the Pertronics with the MSD. I think Crane is less money.

I have the whole set-up on ulf. It isn't on there cause I "wanted it", but because I "needed it". D-jet cars don't "need" it (IMO), but it can't hurt.....except your pocketbook. I found that an entire redo of the ignition system is necessary to take advantage of the hot spark, (working backwards) from the plugs to the new CD module of your choice.
