These heads are killing me
I've got a pair of heads, cast in numbers for both are 022-101-372. According to several webpages and THREE other books these are supposed to be 2.0L 914 heads.
BUT, they're not. They're off of a 1.7L, four-stud intakes and small bore. So, what's the story with these things? The numbers are very clear, and definitely cast, not remarked. They've been a mystery to me. Any ideas? |

If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, it's prolly a 1.7. As you already know, all 2.0 914 heads are three stud intake.

acording to Tom Wilson's book
022-101-372 are 1700-2000 type4 heads depending on letter code. (excluding 2000 914 engines) 039-101-371A are 2000 914 heads. Now here is my related question. If one is going to port polish and replace the valves anyway, can 9141.8 heads (or bus heads) be redrilled to the 3 stud pattern?

Why do you need three studded heads....just change the manifold bolt pattern. Lots cheaper....carb manifolds usually are both....they have three holes in the middle.

Then drill two holes to the side of the middle hole, or simply get an a 1.7/18 manifold...

The VW bus 2.0 heads were 4 bolt like the 1.7/1.8 heads. As I remember, they had smaller valves and no sodium filled exhausts.
You can have your heads modified so that the spark plug location is the same as the 2.0 914 heads. Question would be WHY? It ain't gonna make it that much faster (called return for money invested). Jake Raby likes the 1.8 heads (thicker deck material) and as I remember, he said a well worked set of 1.8s will flow as well as 2.0s. Oh Well - it's only money!

Just for clarification.
I have 2.0 heads on a 2.0 car with 2.0 tin and fuelinjection, my question was simply aimed at wheter other than 2.0 heads could be modified to work as 2.0 on the ports, and then I recalled that the plug locations are no the same making it inpratical. I'll just have my current 2.0 heads redone its not that big of a deal. sorry to have hijacked the thread.................. ![]()

Where'd my text go?
the pic above is a 1.7 head exhaust port. look at the way the guide and support casting intrudes into the exhaust port. on the 2.0 it's a lot less. I was going to clean up my 1.7 heads to be more like the 2.0's you see here.

So what happens if , as a quick fix, I throw 2.0 p&c and heads on a 1.8 case. can it be done with out other mods and run?

You would have to use the "big bore" 1.7/1.8 p&c's as the wrist pin location is different on a 2.0l. I think the piston would stickout 1/4 of an inch beyond the cylinder (can't remember exactly).
