Bulletproof?

Just wondering what the term "bulletproof" means when talking about engines? I hear it used in conjunction with the type 4 bottom end and also read it recently in a post about the Toyota MR2 turbo engine.
Curiosity has the best of me now...or is that my ignorance...

Thanks

It means extremely reliable. Typically the term is used in conjunction with a hot-rodded motor or an abused one. A bulletproof bottom end would indicate you could hot-rod the top end (higher compression, cams, turbo-charged, etc.) without having to worry about reliability on the bottom end. Or if an engine was generally bulletproof it could survive lack of oil changes, excessive lugging or over-revving without failing.

Being bulletproof doesn't mean, though, that nothing ever goes wrong so I wouldn't take it as gospel that something is "absolutely bulletproof."

My understanding of how kevlar works is that if it gets shot in the "bottom end" it still will bruise....big time.

I think the steel plate is the safer option....

Depends on the bullet.... While in the Navy my Guns would shoot 70lb bullets that exploded. Not much was up to the task of being "my bullet proof" If you were within 14 miles, you could run only to die tired

I know of a guy who builds engine killer bullets. Stainless steel rod inserted into the end of a .357 cartridge. The bullet pushes the rod thru the fender into the block. Sold to police departments only.

At 70lbs...don't they move up to the "shell" category?

A hunting broadhead will go thru Kevlar.

Anyone build arrowproof engines?
