early vs late questions
I've got a '70 and a '74 and was wondering, what's the difference between:
1. Early vs late momo hub adapters. Any way to make 1 fit both? 2. Early vs late bump steer spacers. Thanks Ed |
1. I believe that the splines are different, so there is no one hub adaptor that fits both.
2. The rack setup is the same, AFAIK, so the same parts work for all 914s. (And many 911s, too.) What the heck, they're just really thick washers and long bolts anyway, right? ;) --DD |
I've got a '73 and the spline is the same as VW bug. When did it change and what did it change to?
|
I think it was different in 70-71. Possibly 72? Hmm.... I'd have to look through the parts manual to be sure, and I don't have it with me at the moment...

I've always been puzzled by hearing reference to those terms 'early' and late'.
It seems to me that those may be good for most items on the 914, but in fact there really is an early (70-72), middle (73-74) and late (75-76). [Oops! error corrected] |
Right, I know about the door bars, the bumpers, the 1.7, the fixed passenger seat, etc. It's the liitle stuff that's hard to learn.

Of course, that classification system doesn't work completely. For instance, "early" cars had the fixed passenger's seat. Uh, but so did 72s.
So terms like "early" wind up being kind of nebulous. But you can at least usually count on "early" including the 70-71 cars, and "late" including the 75-76 cars, because there wasn't a whole lot of difference between either year within each of those pairs. 72-74 is where lots of stuff got changed. --DD |
Thanks for the feedback! Guess the '70 wasn't the best choice as a parts car for the '74. Oh well...luckily it's a driver.

I posted this in the Steering Wheel thread, but incase some of you missed it... apologies to those who didn't miss it.
Does anyone know about a '74 spline? is it the same as any bug spline? It would make finding a less-expensive steering wheel much, much easier. |
You need to be careful generalizing Bug. Bug splines changed in 1970 (20mm to 21mm), and again in 1974 (to 17mm). This smaller size matches VW rabbit, etc., by the way.
I can't remember the sizes of 914 or how it changed. At one point I think I knew how all this fit, but alas I have purged it from my memory. |

I'm like... well, it doesn't have safety glass, crash bumpers, or any other safety device on it at all but I guess you could install 3-point belts in the car. I wonder if he ever did? |
