sterring wheel options?

Hi.. I'm thinking about changing my steering wheel to something a little smaller in diameter...

I know, I know... but it will never be in concourse shape anyway...

Do you have any suggestions on what would fit?

Thanks,
robert.

The PO put a MOMO wheel on mine..it's quite a bit smaller than stock from what I can tell.

The thing is, he put an extension on it...made of wood (with black tape over it)! It has holes drilled out for the attachment bolts, with a plastic cover where the horn is. Quite cheezy. I bought a new part for the column end/horn button, but have been too chicken to do much serious thinking about getting it to fit.

I just installed a Momo wheel on my car. They have two different sizes, either 350mm (13.7 in.) or 320mm (12.6 in.). I put in a 350mm Monte Carlo. It is smaller than the stock wheel and allows me to get in and out of the car a little easier. (I'm 6'2")

Just make sure that you get the proper hub adapter for a 914. Everything is available here at Pelican.

Put on a 350 mm wheel. hub adapter and wheel should run you about $200-$300. If you find a used wheel, (lots of them on e-bay) be sure it will have the right bolt pattern to match a Momo hub. I had a Dino wheel once and finding a hub that fit their pattern was a pain.
the various Momo hubs are available here on PP.

A really nice, correct "vintage" looking wheel is the Momo Prototipo. Wayne did a group-buy/special on them recently, and may have some left.

If not, the Mod.07 is very similar.

I put a 350 Momo on. Got it off Ebay for $67. Nice wheel too! Then ordered the adapter from my local body shop for $50. Installs real easy. The smaller wheel sure gave the car a "quicker" feel when turning.

I found some places charge an arm & a leg for those adapters. It's been a year & a 1/2 but I don't think they went up that much. Check a local BIG body & custom shop that deals in Momo.

Here's my wheel... it's a Momo Prototypo look-a-like
suede with 90mm deepdish
Has momo bolt patern
IIRC I paid $80 for the wheel and $40 for the hub (both new)

Cheers,

Jeroen

I agree Momo prototipo is a cool look. Mine came with a small Dino wheel (I have yet to see it anywhere else) so I'll just keep that one. I wish I could get a suede wheel cover for it though

According to the rep I spoke to today you need to fit the adapter to the wheel! Check with an outlet for Momo to see what goes with what.

ok.. maybe i have my terms confused... do i need a hub adapter or a hub?

adapter fits between existing 914 hub and new momo wheel.. right?
or
i'd have to replace existing hub with new hub?

You will need an adapter to fit on the existing hub.
At least, that's what I was told & did.
I looked at Ebay and found a wheel that I liked & fit my price range. There were alot of wheels to choose from. Then I went to the body shop/Momo rep and he matched the wheel with the hub adapter by the #'s on the wheel. Piece of cake!

Now it all makes sense, a steering wheel at the dinner table, cup holders in your car...

"...so if I buy a 914 momo adapter, will it fit just about any momo steering wheel?..."

Yep, every momo-wheel, every sparco-wheel, every OMP-wheel and a lot of other types of aftermarket wheels (as long as they have the momo-style bolt patern)

Cheers,

Jeroen
