leaking fuel pump

A friend of mine called me and asked if i have experience with leaking 914 fuel pumps.

Unfortunatly for him my car has always been carbed and i've always had a different pump. His is a stock 72 with a 1.7

He tells me his appears to be leaking at the electrical connection point seen in the pic at the joint of the pump head to the motor body. A drip every 5-10 seconds.

Any suggestions?

Conrad Peden

PS thanks for the image PP online catalog.

There is an O ring seal which wears/dries out. It is revealed by removing the 3 screws shown in the pic. Problem is, finding correct replacement O ring. I looked everywhere and finally gave up. Solution: new pump.

before you remove the 3 screws and the additional 1 screw, notice the position of the thin plate under the part on the pump with the hose fittings. it also comes off and i think the position of the plate is important, that is, the plate has an off centered hole in it where the rotating piece that holds the rollers spins. there is another o-ring under the plate (so, 2 o-rings). i also had a hard time finding o-rings and all the ones i tried still resulted in a leak so i did the new fuel pump thing too.

Mine leaked at the same place. take it apart (carefully) and take o-ring to pep boys and match it up to new one. cost .55 and your time.

I figured somone woulda found an o-ring. Just lookin for confirmation.

Someone had to have made the o-ring for the pump to start with and international standards say there is a finite number of o-ring sizes.

We are going to go find one at the parts store.

Handyher, I dont suppose you happen to have the the reciept with the part # for that o-ring.

leaking fuel pump

Here is the info from the pkg. the brand name is 0-tite, stock number 64137, width 3/32", Inside dia. 2-1/16 and outside dia. 2-1/4", this is standard measure i could not find metric size close enough. take yours apart and take the old one with you . if not if would buy size on either side of this one and then return what you don't need.(saves multiple trips to store) hope this helps oh yes be gentle when you put top back in as it is a very tight squeese.
