I think a stock hood weighs about 30# or so. I noted they used "chopped fiberglass", I would try to find one made from mat. Good luck.

The seller says he uses chopped fiberglass, AKA chopper gun. I would not buy a part made that way. Hand laid glass mat covered with glass cloth is the way to go. Stronger, lighter and better looking on the underside. The new carbon fiber craze uses the hand laid process.
There are lots of poeple producing good glass, But, since I have not purchased any, I won't recommend anyone. Just search fiberglass, the names will come out. Always ask how the part is made. |

You guys talk about chopped vs hand laid glass. How many people out there do you really think are making hand laid parts for 914s. Now I am certainly not an expert on fg or even that familiar with it. But, while searching for my 916 kit I researched a little on how it is made... hand laid is super time consuming. The chopper stuff is supposed to be of decent quality as long as the production people don't dump a lot of "filler" into the mix and only stick with the glass and resin. Also, the chopper stuff goes together much quicker and is easier to produce so I would therefore expect that the Quality Control could be better on that stuff. After a guy spends a bunch of time handlaying glass I would imagine that he would be pretty hard pressed to scrap the part as opposed to "fixing" it. Again, I guess Zekes advice is good... know who you are buying from. There is a ton of info out there with regard to hot rods but pretty much zilch when it comes to 914s. I am trying to find FG front and rear hoods. I think Brad had a line on some good stuff but have not heard from him in a long time. Also, I would wonder if the hand laid vs. chopped makes a difference with regard to the size of the part. My chopper flares seem okay (there is enough roughness on the back from the mat that I can tell they did not just load up the resin) but I would like to see a hood made that way. I would think you would need the added strength of the cloth with the mat to support the structure. Anyone have some good answers?
