1.8 L-Jet FI Diagnosis?

Hey...am helping out with a friend's 74 1.8 L-Jet which he is having trouble with. Car starts but dies after a minute or two.

Is there a good only reference for troubleshooting L-jet system similar to what I have seen for D-Jet??

Thanks!

Mike

you can search that subject here on this bbs, or get some more technical data on shoptalk forums under 914, FI or Type 4. But the for the real deal check out www.914club.com/downloads or something like that. There youwill find the porsche and bosch manuals. I've been buying the bosch books on ebay and half.com for very few $.

The site appears to be down, or maybe the Knob Creek is separating my cranial hemispheres and I didn't type in the correct url...single batch bourbon is the kind!

For starters, make sure the relay for the fuel pump/injectors is working.

With key turned on, remove the air cleaner and move the flapper inside the AFM, this should activate the relay mentioned above.

What this does is as soon as the motor turns over and the suction of the pistons opens the flapper, the injectors get juice (but they do not fire until the coil collapses) and the fuel pump turns on.

A major vacuum leak will cause the motor to die due to the flapper not recieving enough vacuum or movement from the incomming air not being suffeciant enough...

When I was trouble shooting my L-Jet, I plugged up ALL of the hoses so that I knew the only air going into the motor HAD to come past the AFM.....this includes the hoses going to the Oil filler.

I have had more than my share of problems with my L-jet system. Mike has it right with the fuel pump. can you describe what exactly what is happening. how long before it dies? Can you hear the fuel pump? is the cold start hooked up?
It could be a number of things but i would start with the fuel pump like mike said. check your fuel pressue and make sure you have a good 30 psi the whole time. that will be a good place to start... but what do i know...
