Horn button problem
 

Hello,

I had problems with my horn and I decided to remove the horn pad.

bad suprise, I discovered that two of the three springs are broken

On picture below, red arrows show broken springs and white arrow shows the good spring.

Do you have an idea on the way to fix that problem ?

Hmm. I don't think those are the springs at all! At least, not in my car they aren't. In my car, it's the rubber "boot" that plugs into that hole in the middle of the metal part there that acts as the spring. It also insulates the contact ring (the silver part furthest down in the picture) from the rest of the steering wheel electrically. The idea is, when you push the horn button, the button rocks and part of the contact ring touches the metal of the rest of the wheel or the wheel hub. This completes a circuit and trips the horn relay, sending power to the horn which sounds.

There should be a place for a wire to attach (a ~3mm wide metal tab) on that contact ring somewhere.

(Note that early cars have a different mechanism for the horn button.)

I had the same problem with my 914. Two out of three springs were broken and the horn button would fall off at inconvenient times. Ended up buying a new horn button (a really good one) on e-bay for around $20.

Same solution as you ... I just received a horn pad with horn boot bought on eBay.

So, when I watch my sterring wheel, I think that there is a problem.

The flexible contact pin seems to be in the wrong side of the steering: I think it must touch the horn pad. Can you confirm or not ?
