I've seen photos over on the 914world forum.

The bellcrank that the throttle pedal pushes on has an extra tab on the side of it. The hand-throttle has a rod that pushes on that tab. Friction in the hand-throttle lever keeps the throttle in place. That's really all there is to it.

914-6 Hand Throttle

It is a very simple set up and easy to install...problem may be finding the parts!! You will need the Hand Throttle assembly (including the plastic knob); the special accelerator "tabbed" bellcrank end piece; metal rod w/fitting and the small metal piece that "holds" the rod suspended inside the tunnel between the hand throttle assembly and the bellcrank. Simple...but very effective for keeping engine revs up until normal operating temps! Good luck finding the parts!

Here is another source:

Hand Throttle

Pelican may be able to get one or the other for you; it's worth calling in and talking to Glenn Sager or Bruce Stone in our Sales department; both are 914 guys.

Easy enough to make using the correct offset heater lever, you can take the throttle lever out and weld a tab to it easy enough ,the support piece for the rod is also easy to make, the hole is already there for it to bolt to @ the front of the tunnel.
I used a spare ball and cup I had off a old weber carb on the end of the heater lever.
I found it took more time to set it up than make it.

To finish off I painted the original knob with black paint.
They work well ,if your carbs are in good tune you don't need to keep it on long
