Finding Gears and Used Tranny's?
I want to try Brad's trick of using an "H" gear from an early 901 and altering the ratios slightly to better match my six. A few questions:
1. Where can I get an "H" gear? I've seen the ads for PowerHaus in Excellence, but heard they are very high priced. Any alternatives? What can I expect to pay? 2. I want to pick up an orphaned side shifter and try out James' (Red-Beard) rebuild article while I'm swapping the gears. Any pointers on how to evaluate a used 901 that is just "sitting there"? Price ranges? BTW, James did a real nice job on his tranny article! When will it be added to the Pelican library? You can check it out at: http://home.san.rr.com/pb914/full_on_synchro_change.pdf |
Tranny gears are expensive with a capital X! The shops or racers that have them hold them closer than gold! I have a close ratio tranny with a Limited slip that the shop that checks it said is worth close to $4000! Good luck.

As I keep and continue to say...
Changing gears leads to a change in the gear stack tolerance which means re-shimming the gear stack and re-setting the pinion depth. This is not a trival change. You will need some special tools to accomplish this beyond what my article outlines. I highly reccomend getting the section of the factory tranny manuals for this since it does outline _exactly_ what you need to do set the stack shims and the pinion depth. Oh and I'll second what John says. Tranny gears are expensive. Unless you have an over riding need to change the gear ratios, I wouldn't. James |
Thanks for the heads up guys, being only a mild speed addict, I'll put that project at the bottom of my priority list.
I still do want to pick up a spare tranny though, any pointers for evaluating an orphaned side shifter with no references? |
Out of a car - you pays your money and takes your chances. If you're looking for parts, tail shifters are much cheaper. A used tail can be had for about $100. I wouldn't pay more than $150-200 for a used side shift with no history.
Sometimes you can find them cheaper.... James |
