Where do I find complete wire harneses?

I'm helping in the complete restoration of a 73' 914. We finished stripping it down to a bare tub today and will be sending it out to be acid dipped this week.
As all the wire harnesses were pretty much junk, I said I didn't think it would be real tough to find them. Now I've got to find out where!
Are these a "phone in and ask" item at Pelican? I don't see them in the catalog. Any other sources would be a great help. Thanks in advance.

I have one out of a 1975 1.8L.

I'm not sure that one will work. The owner wants to keep the original 1.7 engine with original D-jet FI. He's also very wealthy and the cost won't be as much an object as "brand new parts" would be. Appreciate the responce though! And I'll sure keep it in mind just in case...

Wow... that must be nice!!! Gotta ask though, if cost is no object, why a 1.7L???

Send a PM to Geoff, user name Bleyseng. You will here good news, I think.

DSPTurtle: Kind of a long story. Client's first Porsche was a Sunflower Yellow,73' 914. It was a H.S graduation present, and at the time his dream car. Fast forward 30 plus years, he now runs the family business (internationaly known products headquartered here in the Milw. area, but I'll leave unnamed). He owns a collection of Porsches, but for the last several years has wanted to add a car like his first one to his collection. Matter of fact, he's selling his yellow 76' and will replace it with the 73' when it's done. Best part is he fully intends to drive it.
I shouldn't say cost is NO object, but new is preferred over used parts for this project.

Zeke: Thanks for the tip, I'll check with Bleyseng.

Any time there is a stock-type item that you don't see in the catalog, phone in and ask. Sometimes they're NLA, sometimes they cost a stupid amount of money--but sometimes they're available for only a moderately-large amount of money. ;)

Can't hurt to ask--the phone call is even free!

Try Pelican like DD says using the phone. I just threw out the good one from the 70 I had. Guy who wanted it flaked out.
The other place that might have some good ones is PartsObsolete. Ask for Gary he has a ton of stuff in pretty good shape too.
Oh yeah, try HighPerformanceHouse, Rich Botempi.
Finally, go to www.914Club.com and post there plus ask Brad. If anyone knows he will.
Also, Dave at TriadWestPreformance.com might have some. He is very slow to reply so be patient.

Bowlsby must not be online today. He makes reproduction harnesses for 914's, do a search on his name for particulars.

Loan Dog 01-25-2003 07:24 PM

Thanks for all the leads guys. I planned on calling PP - just threw the phone-in comment cuz I knew DD would be tuning in!
From the looks of this tub, this won't be a short term project. I'm not sure if he knows what a PROJECT he's bought himself here.
Thanks again everyone.

Bowlsby doesn't make chassis wiring harnesses that I know of. He does make the FI harnesses, the engine harnesses, and the alternator harness.

I have an EXCELLENT condition chassis harness out of a 72 1.7 that I could part with if you don't find new..

The motor harness is in use, but the full chassis harness is excellent, complete, and not cracked, cut or torn. I could even be persuaded to include fuse board and gromets....

Re: acid dipping.

If you aren't replacing the rocker clamshells, the acid will disintegrate the heater tubes inside the rocker boxes. A lack of heat will result.

I have a good condition earlier djet engine harness if you need to go that route.

I have a NOS main body harness (front to back) from a 1974 which should work fine on the 1973. Somebody correct me if I am wrong.

It is in excellent condition.

Price $500 plus S/H. Firm!

e-mail me privately and I can send photos.

Regards,

Karl Ellzey

It will work OK, but it will not be the same. There were wiring differences between the 73 and 74 cars. (For one, the 73 had left and right turn signal indicators in the tach--the 74 only had a single one. And there were other detail differences.)

For someone who is doing a "price not much of an object" resto, a 73 harness is probably what is specifically wanted.

I found this on the web a while ago. They make reproduction harnesses for cars. I know they have a 914 /6 harness, but I don't know about a 914 /4. If price is no object, then I am sure that they could make one.

Hope that helps......
