What is the best way to trace an oil leak?
I was convinced that my old "slow" leak which has become a more "moderate" leak was push rod tube seals. As i now look at the lovely pattern on the garage floor I am not so convinced. Anyway, how should I attack this?
I saw posts for all sorts of tricks but it seems the most tried and true was scrubbing the underside of the engine and keeping a good eye out. Is this so? If it is push rod tubes should I yank engine this winter and do everything? Someone said they can be done w/out removal. Any help would truly be appreciated! Joe note: email = monish@ix.netcom.com |

Oil leaks can come from the pressure sender on top and then run down or the tubes or the cooler seals, etc, etc. At NIGHT, I would recommend scrubbing or degreasing the entire engine when warm and blowing it dry with an air hose. Then add a bottle of the flourscent dye available from NAPA and run the engine and look for the leaks with a black light. The dye doesn't hurt the oil and will show up really well then you'll know where to work exactly.
