Synthetic motor oils?
Is it O.K. to use synthetic motor oil in the type IV motors? I've heard that you need to change the seals in order for it not to leak. Is this just B.S. or is there something to this.

We use synthetic oil in all our cars, the 1987 Turbo started leaking about 4 months after switching to synthetic, but it had about 70 k miles on the engine and the seals were old. Both 914s have used it since they were rebuilt and no leaks. I guess it depends on how old the engine is, but the advantages outweigh the disadvantages I feel, especially for engines that can run hot.

I just did my 2nd oil change on my new motor (4500 miles) and switched from a standard 20/50 to Mobil 1 15/50. No leaks and I swear the engine is significantly quieter. My temp guage reads about the same, but the car heats up faster and cools down quicker. So far I think it's great stuff.
