Oil pump ID
Warning: 1st time engine rebuilder Q
I couldn't find this in the search pages though am sure I've seen it before. I'm trying to figure out which oil pump I just pulled off my 2.0L. I'm sure it's not stock, but want to find out if it is a HD pump so I know not to run thick oil in the engine. Can you measure the gears to figure out which pump? If so, what dimension should I measure? Thanks! Last edited by BenI; 01-29-2003 at 08:05 AM.. |

A picture would help greatly. If no picture then the body measurements and any writing on the body.

Here are some images. The only marking I see is a small "D" on the fron of the pump. It looks like it's been ground and barely clears the bolt heads on my cam gear. I just want to know if this pump is overkill and I should replace it with a stock one. I live in Colorado so it does get cold up here. Thanks!

33 mm gears? Stock is what, 24? I'd say its overkill for stock applications. What type of rebuild r u doing?

I'm bulding a 2056cc engine to be used as a daily driver. I'm now looking at replacing this pump with aircooled.nets aluminum pumpo with 30mm gears. I really don't know about options for oil system upgrades and am afraid I'm going to put too big a pump on. Can anyone elaborate on the options such as full flow etc? I don't undertsand the benefits of such systems or how much work is involved to install them. I'm pretty lost now.

That pic is a 33 or 35mm cast iron pump, could be a Melling or a Melling copy.
A 30mm T-1 pump is right at home in a T-4 engine, you have to shorten the drive snout .095-.100" to clear the cam, and make sure you have the proper drive gear engagement (you should do this anyways), and press the gear off/on to adjust. John Aircooled.Net Inc. |

While the larger diameter gears in the pump could produce higher pressure, assuming you shim the relief springs. I was told any oil pump "locked down" could produce 200+ psig.
How bout' the larger pump moving move volume if the relief is left stock? Volume is more critical than pressure (in most cases), as the pressure at the interface of the rod journal and rod bearing is more than 5000 psig. If a cooler were added, this larger volume would keep the engine cooler. Oh well ........ just thoughts
