1976 914 clutch not working
Girlfriend and I just purchased our first "working" project car - 1976 Porsche 914 2.0. We test drove it and every thing seemed fine mechanically. After driving it about halfway home it would not go into gear. It felt like the clutch wasn't working properly and would only grind if attempting to get into any gear including reverse. After getting it towed home I shortened the clutch cable so It no longer had to be pushed all the way to the floor but it still won't go into gear and just grinds. looking for advice from more experienced 914 people as how to proceed in diagnosing and fixing the problem.

Your description is of a failure during the drive home. Ensure the clutch tube hasn't broken loose.

Yes, check the clutch tube.
On my first 914, I dropped the engine to replace my clutch and found the clutch tube weld had broken in the tunnel ![]() I was 17, it did allow me to learn how to drop the engine though.
