I have a 914 that has a rear shifter trans and would like to change it to a side shifter. I have a side shifter trans with all the extra rods that run from the the firewall to the trans including the engine mount. My question would I also have to change the everything from the shift lever to the firewall.

You will need to change:
- Gear shift lever
- Front shift rod
- Firewall bushing (there is an "adapter bushing" for putting a side-shift linkage in a tail-shift car)
- Shift coupler and rear shift rod
- Shift rod head
- Side-shift transmission
- Curvy engine mount bar
- Brackets from engine mount bar to car's body
- Rubber mounts between the engine mount bar and the engine
- Brackets for the rubber mounts

All of those are different from the parts for the tail-shift cars. You can use your old shift knob if you like, but everything else changes.

If your tail-shift trans is in really good shape, and you are comfortable with opening it up and swapping stuff around, you can swap the shift rails and forks and such over from the side-shifter into it. Also the side shift console, with the gear selector rake. But the easiest thing to do is just bolt up the side-shift box whole, and all of the other things that go along with it.

Someone in the know quoted me ~~$1k++. Anyhow I had Chris Foley at Tangerine look at it. And he got the thing shifting like it was supposed to. Now I don't want to convert it!
