Cam question
I'm building a 2056cc motor from a stock 2.0, what cam would everyone recommend, of course it will be a webcam and I will buy new webcam lifters. The motor will be carbed and will have SI Stainless valves all around, (I just ordered them). The heads will be polished and mildly ported. The car will be a summer daily driver that will see some occasional track time. Whicj cam would be best?

I know very little about cams but am doing the same rebuild currently and had the Webcam 163/86B suggested to me because I wanted some low-end torque. This is a dual-duration cam and I think that means the exhaust valve stays open for longer than the intake. This helps to overcome the problem with the restrictive exhaust port on the T-4 heads. I think Porsche 2.0L heads are a different story. I would email John at www.aircooled.net as he was extremely helpful with my cam choice. Also, his prices are great and so is the service. Good luck!

Another great cam that works really well on both carb'ed and fi'ed engines is a Webcam 91 grind with 112 intake lc and 108 exhaust lc. Wide powerband.

163/86B is way too much for an engine without headwork, increased valve margins and some added CR. The 163/86B is a cam that has ALOT of lift, .500 to be exact and can cause some head problems if they are not set up for that much lift.
I stay in the 280is duration range for "esser" engine with smaller displacement, expecially for the street. I Love a 163/86B as a base for my bigger engines, but I modify some aspects of them, especially lobe centers. I have another dual pattern cam, with tighter duration margins that works well for a smaller engine, ut it still has .500 lift symmetrical. Not enough cam is WAY better than too much in a street car! |
