pertronix ignition... random ranting..
First off, "my car is running again!"
Either it be the recent AA bashing that's been going on on rennlist that got me in the mood, or just my sheer frustration with the Pertronix Ignition. I feel it's my time to rant on a bit about the pertronix system. My car was having problems last week, mistiming, backfire, rough idle, etc... Problems i had when i first got the car. all those problems were fixed the first time when i tossed out the stock points and installed the Pertronix System. Instant start, great idle, extra kick (or so it felt) off the line. I had nothing to complain about, probably the best 50 someodd bucks i've ever spent on my 914. That was about 5 months ago... yesterday (or was it two day ago? time's wierd when you're stuck in the engine compartment of the 914) i pulled off the distributor cap to find metal shavings. Upon further inspection, the pertronix unit went kaput. The main unit that fits around the rotor was held together by GLUE! With the heat generated within the distributor and the engine, no wonder it came apart. As a satisfied customer of Pertronix in the past 5 months, i feel bad about ragging on them, but then, 5 month seems to be a AWFUL SHORT time for the life span of an ignition system, don't the points last longer than that?!.. Of course, the results for everyone may vary. And like i said, i was very satisfied with the pertronix when i first got it, but with shoddy construction like GLUE, i'm now advising people to spend the extra 50 bucks to get the crane ignition, at least their's has a 1 year warranty... Just speaking my mind, Jeff |
If you call good ole JC Whitney you can get the Allason/Crane FireBall 700 for $84. All you have to know is that you want the 12v bug setup. This is the generic 12v ignition unit and saves ya $20-$40 in the long run.
