Help me connect the dots-76 914 2.0 engine issue

Have 911 air cooled efi experience but recently took delivery of a 76 914 2.0 car from a well known 914 dealer sold as a turn key car with a recent 50 mile road test.

When I picked it up from the trucker after a 2000 mile haul it started right up and idled normally but as I pulled away it would not go above 2200 rpm in any gear without violent bucking. My first thought was fuel starvation. Nursed it home, contacted the dealer, and of course, was perfect when it was loaded into the truck. Also, trucker made no mention of not being able to exceed 2200 rpm. Was interesting as it was 2200 rpm in any gear regardless.

Went out the next day and it started up and ran strong for a short road test.

Couple of days later I needed to move it from my shop to our garage and after 600 yard run it just died. No sputtering like a fuel issue, just died like the key was turned off. Would not start and had to be pushed the rest of the way to the garage. Went out the next day and it starts right up.

Any help solving this puzzle would be much appreciated!

I had he same problem and after replacing the cylinder head temp sensor problem never returned.

So the CHT could be culprit on the second occurrence of dying a few minutes after starting but could it have caused the inability to rev above 2200 rpms (which has not repeated itself since the initial pickup from transport)? Maybe I am wrong to try to connect the two events.

Cht

I had a number of poor running events till I changed the CHT sensor

It is accessed through the engine tin near the #3 cylinder (passenger side), correct? Is really difficult to get to I guess.

Not that difficult to get to; a deep-well socket works. One thing to beware of: It's a steel sensor screwed into an aluminum head. It loves to strip the threads in the hole.

Look for wires that are not securely plugged in; intermittent problems are often electrical in nature. Check inside the distributor; make sure that the braided ground connection between the points plate and the distributor body is securely connected. Check that there isn't trash in the fuel tank.

Thanks for weighing in Dave, always appreciate your knowledge. I will check cht and pursue the rest of Dave's suggestions.
