1990 S2 Cabriolet shock replacement

I saw in an earlier forum comment that the Koni 8641-1414 Sport would fit my car. Parts houses say no. Any idea on a good replacement shock? Not looking to improve the performance from the original.

1414 inserts require that you do the "hacksaw mod" to your existing shock housings, and then insert the 1414 units into your old struts.

They should work fine for your car. If you want to go stock you will have to purchase full struts brand new from someone like Paragon. Sachs or Konis were OEM, depending on your options.
