Speedometer Cable

Ok, decided that I need to try a new speedometer cable and ordered one last fall in anticipation of the spring cleaning of my wallet. Now I just got the latest Tweeks catalog and it shows two different cables (1 and 2 piece). How do I tell which configuration I've got. This is an 84 CA version and, will the one piece work if it's a 2?

The two peice cable is for cars with an O2 millage counter. The millage counter simply turns on the O2 light. It is part of the smog regs and it tells you to replace the O2 sensor. It doesn't mean the sensor has failed it gust counts the miles and turns on the light. You can tell if you have the two peice by following the spedo cable where it comes out of the firewall and goes down by the strut tower. If it conects to a black plastic box about 4 inches square thats the O2 millage counter. The second spedo cable come out of the bottom of the millage counter and goes to the left front wheel. The picture in my avatar is me replacing the spedo cable. I originaly replaced mine with the one peice it will fit. However my speedo jumped around like crazy untill I got to 70 mph. So when it broke because I probably didnt leave enough slack from the firewall to the speedo I replaced it with the two peice and the speedo is now very smooth. Advantage to the two peice cable is that you only need to replace the part thats broken. Be carefull with the O2 millage counter the plastic threads can crack with age and they are about $130.

Mine is a 924 NA you may not have one I have never worked on a 944. My O2 light is above and directly inbetween the speedo and tach. It is a red light on the plastic that holds the three guages in place. It has "OXY" or something like that printed in white letters on it.

Ah ha! That explains what those two "covers" are on the instrument panel. I have seen some people here mistake those for hidden screws that hold the cluster in (as opposed to the two that actually do in the top). I always thought that they should have served some purpose. No, the 944's just have black inserts there. Out of curiosity, is there some other idiot light in the one on the other side as well?
