I need new front suspension
Hello All,
I took my '87 944 NA in today to get an alignment and they called and told me I needed new front shocks, as the right one is no good. Without having seen it yet the gentleman on the phone said I should replace the whole assembly, and in fact I should do both the left and right at the same time. He doesn't do this type of work so he isn't trying to sell me anything. So where do I go from here? Does anyone sell the entire assembly, or do I need to buy the parts all separately? If I have the entire assembly I can swap them out but I don't have the ability to compress the springs myself so any suggestions are appreciated. GHEN

Get a compressor from your FLAPS. You will need to do the "hacksaw mod" on your struts...

The "hacksaw mod" means cutting it open at the top, replacing parts, and re-welding correct? Can you point me toward any info on this? Thanks! GHEN

Friendly Local Auto Parts Store. You can rent the tool from them for free usually.
Look at Koni 1414 strut replacements on Paragon. They have everything you need.

Don’t mess about with inserts which are not stock spec anyway. Do as your mech told you and buy two new genuine Porsche (boge/Sachs) front struts and swap them over. If you swap them in yourself it will cost you $600 tops and they come with a 2-year Porsche warranty.
Best prices are from the Porsche dealers who sell parts online like Sonnen.

The factory struts are remarkably good and long-lasting IMO. Maybe not at top performance but acceptable and safe after many years and miles. Therefore IMO it's not crazy to put on a good used pair after making sure they have decent damping, possibly comparing to what you have now. Of course new is better if you can afford it or if the car is nice enough to warrant the expense. Sometimes you can get good take-offs from someone who is upgrading or from a part-out.

It turns out my car had Koni sport shocks that came original from the factory as an option. I am having them rebuilt by TruChoice.
Would still love to learn more about these cars suspension. GHEN
