Charging light on, new alternator
My son’s early 85 944 NA. New battery a few months ago. Charging light came on. Had the system checked at local auto parts place, alternator isn’t charging like it should. Replaced the alternator but the charging light is still on. WTF?!
Ideas? Suggestions?

The charging light is part of the circuit that provides the current to the exciter wire. If the light is on, it means that the wire to the exciter is broken, the exciter circuit in the alternator is bad, or the alternator is not generating enough voltage to balance the circuit (which turns off the light).
Check the wire connection. Check that the alternator is putting out at least 13.5 volts. Replace the alternator.
