limited slip transmission

I have a question for some of the 944 guru's. What year was the first LSD tranny
offered on for a 944? The reason I ask is there is a 1984 944 for sale that claims to have a LSD transmission on it. I would like to confirm this, and I have the vin#
WP0AA0940EN460809 . Any response is welcomed.

I want to say it started as on option on '87s, but my 85.5 had one that was swaped in. I think that they are interchangable with any year though. I have seen some memeber with an LSD in th eeatly models here.

I'd have to double check on the first year they offered them...
First, you wouldn't be able to tell from the VIN, you would need option codes from the rear option sticker in the spare tire well.

I'm 99% positive the '84 is too early for a factory LSD, though the trans could have been changed out. Jack up the rear of the car and turn one of the rear wheels... Does the other wheel turn the same direction? If so, it's an LSD. If it turns the opposite direction, it is an open diff.

Thanks for the quick replies, I looked underneath the rear and it appeared to be a
rear tranny that had been changed. Next question, If it is a LSD rear end would it be worth buying the car at a 900 dollar purchase price? ( the car needs HG and some other repairs to be road worthy).

"worth it" is a relative term.

even if it does have a LSD, u have no idea in what condition it's in. if it's original never serviced, it could be on its last legs anyway

All of the 944 cars had limited slip as an option. My 83 came with it from the factory.

Check the option code sticker.. # 220 is for a LSD. As mentioned it could have been swapped out or swapped in, you can check the transmission code which is on the top of the trans bell housing.. the first prefix will be 8Q or or 7V

You can jack the rear of the car up and see if both wheels spin in the same direction, but that is not always the best way to check because the clutch discs can be worn out enough that they dont do this.

Thanks Guy's, However the real question is the guy states the car drove well up until the head gasket blew, do you think a LSD is worth a the risk? Overall the car is not that bad, but it definitely needs paint.

944s are readily available for very little money - unless this one is just about free, i'd pass on the headache

The general rule is no more than $500 for a non-running 944. If it does have a LSD in good shape, it's probably worth a bit more.

Do you want it to fix and daily drive? You'll spend alot making it trustworthy.
Make into a track toy? Always a good choice Even better if it's an LSD.
Fix and sell? Probably not alot of profit even if it's an easy fix and cheap paint job.
Part out? You'd make a little cash, but it's alot of work and mess. Plus too many 944 are going to the cemetary.

If you decide to go for it, either get the part number to confirm or do the LSD test, (I think it has to be in gear if you do the jack it up/do both wheels spin the same way test).
Offer him 500, try to settle on 700, top offer 800 and feel good about it.

If I weren't broke from the holiday season, I'd be talking you out of it , but asking where the car is located
