Thud noise

Ok, I got ANOTHER question for you guys. Recently I was going to this girls apartment complex and I go over a speed bump and I heard a THUD noise coming from the front right wheel. I was like wtf so I back up over it and I hear it again. Now I hear it all the time when Im going over bumps, beit going fast or slow. It always comes from the front right side. Im assuming it has to do with bad suspension or something like that. So what exactly is wrong and how much will it cost to fix?

I dunno, but you had to make it a point to say it was a girls' apartment you were going to, huh?

CJ: What's this girl's name?

Cooler: (looks frantically around, then looks at computer) Ummmm... Dell! Dell, that's it!

CJ: Dell what?

Cooler: Dell... uh... Trinitron!

(forgive me, I'm in a weird mood tonight. must be the robatussin...)

It's your Macpherson strut, it's a thud with a specific note right?.. try pushing and pulling up and down on the front end when it's quiet, you should be able to hear it then also. It's kind of a middle C sort of "Foop thud... try to listen for it.....

Ok, I went down in the garage and picked up the right side of my car then let it go then did it again and again. I kept hearing a pop when it went up and another pop when it went down. Then I went to the left side and did the same. No pop.

If you jack up the car and make it think you are going to fix it, the sound will probably fix itself. That's what happened to my CVs... Porsches are wily that way.

popping sound.. uhmm

1. strut cartridge... 1st guess
2. Check the bolt on the upper strut mount... hopefully loose if not the upper strut mount maybe toast...
3. Look at sway bar bushings, tie rod end or worse yet your control arm

Get someone to move car up and down as you try and isolate the sound

Good luck

maybe the strut is just easily exciteable. It knew that you were heading over to that fine Dell Trinitron's house and started getting stiff and making popping noises...

When you picking up on the side of the car your unloading several suspension pieces on the 85 1/2.

Jack the car up and check for play in the following places:

Caster block on the rear of the control arm, the original 85 1/2 castor block has a rubber block and it tends to rot over time, there is an improved version out now.

Ball joint free play, these go out often on the later control arms, and will require replacent or rebuilding of the control arm.

Then on to the strut, check for leaks round the collar, thats a sure sign its going out, then check the strut mount and the strut bearing.
