You'll never believe this..

I just called the mechanic who's doing belts and water pump on my 86 n/a. He had a "problem" with my car....They took off the timing belt cover and belts and decided they couldn't do the repair..and were going to send it to the "DEALER"!!! and THEN call me..!!! WTF!!!!..He said the cheapest pump he could find.. "THE DEALER" was $1,000.00.. I FREAKED!.. I threatened him and he's putting the belts back on and giving it back to me.. he did say the belts were loose and will tensiion them properly... They initially quoted me between 6-7 hundred dollars to do the job. If I hadn't called I'd be looking at a $3,700.00 repair bill.. What is wrong with these A-holes?.. anyone with any suggestions please advise me..
I'm going to take to the guys who initially quoted me Minues the water pump.. because that's making noise now....
They were leery to touch it after I told them what had happened.. I had to talk them into it..
THye want to do a thorough checkover first.. I think I'm screwed.. anyone please help!!..

Frank, calm down, deep breath and relax.
First, you need to find a shop that actually knows about Porsches..look in the local PCA mag, personal referal or even Excellence.
Second, get a written estimate, you can check all the parts prices on Pelican so you know where you are on that side. If your're happy with the shop let them do the job.
Thirdly, tell them you have a fan club!
It's tough to find someone to work with sometimes.

**DEEP BREATH**

Get he car out of there immediately! Don't let them touch anything!

what is so intimidating about your car? Sounds like they are not experienced doing the belts. Don't drive, have it towed, I would doubt their ability to tension the belts at this point.

Know any other experienced porsche shops in the area?

Also, please refresh memory, what is wrong with car - noisy pump, and needs belts done yes?

nope, sorry, that does not hold water (EDIT, no pun intended)

why would he want to send it to a dealer - there is no money in that - he can get you for what, 1 hour maybe, plus towing....

something wrong here

Frank B,

I am wondering if perhaps the mechanic has marked up the dealer's quote before giving you the final quote? In any case, I feel your pain ** poop ** poop **

I hope this may be useful reference....I had the following work done on my '84 944 last August by a P-Car specialty shop in Portland for $1,277.90:

Update water pump kit
Replace water pump
Replace thermostat
Replace cam belt
Replace balance shaft belt
Replace balance tension roller
Replace cam tension roller
Replace distributor
Replace rotor
Change oil and filter

Good luck!

belts pump and rollers go for around 5-7 here.. been shopping for 6 months..went to a "friend" and see what happens?..I suck..
I think the guys, who seem legitimate are leery now.. because they don't know what the "yambag" mechanic I took it to did...

Unhappy

Frank, are these the guys across the street from where you work(ed)? That had a couple of 944's in the driveway?

Hmmm... he has the tool, but he's afraid to work on the car?

Something is very very wrong!

Run away! Run away!

There are a few people here that are in your area, you should be able to find a REAL 944 Mechanic and have the car towed there... I wouldn't trust those guys with my bicycle!

I think I know why, They broke a bolt taking it off.

I did my water pump job. You just have to take off all the belts, rollers and the back timing belt cover to get to the water pump. Everything comes off.

Frank,
Are you Pam's hubby? I sent her an email about where to get 944 repair work done earlier this week. I took my new to me 944s2 cabrio to Dinardo's in Horsham on Wednesday morning and picked it up thursday at lunch. They did a great job. They even advised me against doing some additional work I asked for that they thought wasn't necessary. Total cost was about $1100 for the belts, pump, thermostat, two bad rollers(?), changed the transaxle oil and checked out the car for me. I bought it last week without a PPI. Dinardo's was recommend on some other porsche sites.
Good Luck
Dave
PS - Isn't there a good shop off city line ave on 63rd?

I think the guys name at Dinardo's is John. Very nice, although he's an admitted 911 guy.
I checked around and found that the going rate for the work is 1000-1500. Maybe those clowns realized they couldn't do it for what they quoted you.
