Pitted wheel refurbish 84 944

My wheels on my 84 944 are pitted and dull. One wheel is very badly pitted. Can I use fine sand paper to start the process or will I damage the wheel if I do that? They are cookie cutter wheels. Thanks

Yes, it's better to start with paper too fine than too coarse. Start with something 600 grit wet or dry auto-body paper. Use it wet, add a drop or two of dishwashing liquid to the water and start sanding away. Going to finer grits will prepare it for final polish with a metal polish. Good luck.
