Help! Worn Ring and Pinion?
This just happened to me today as I was driving from Virginia back to Nebraska, and for most of the trip, the car was angry. I'll just let the video I posted tell the tale; first some information, this is on an automatic equipped car, and the sound doesn't occur when the transmission is in neutral. Based on some videos I've found of cars with faulty ring and pinions, this sounds like it's the case here.
A couple things, the part number for the ring and pinion is 087-409-143-J, which is NLA from most places, though I found a VW dealer that sells them for just shy of $1K ![]() https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pm24bz-Y3Ow

Well, I think it's time to just get a new transmission; saw some black colored fluid puddles on the ground beneath it; I'm pretty sure it's mostly from the transmission fluid that leaked out mixing with the grim on the transmission's belly. The reservoir was almost empty so I topped it up and drove around, but the sound is still there, unsurprisingly. Here's a video so you guys can hear it, maybe someone will find it interesting.

Not sure if it's something you want to mess with but I have a complete manual 86 NA I need to get rid of cheap if you want to convert your auto to manual. I'm just across the river in CB. Been for sale for a few months but no one wants a project around here it seems. Runs and drives perfect, just doesn't stop. You could easily part out what you don't need to recoup your costs. If it's something you're interested in, PM me.
