Noise from AT

I have a 1985 944na with automatic transmission.
On my way to work this morning a loud knock developed from the rear of my 85
944. I have
not let the fluid AT level drop below minimum.

Anyway, the knock is not constant. It's frequency will increase with speed.
It sometimes occurs during acceleration; sometimes while at cruising speed.
If I slip the car into neutral the knock will stop.

Thanks in advance,
Bob

My understanding is that AT's eat ring and pinion gears. Jack the car up in the rear put it in neuteral get someone to help you spin both rear tries slowy in the same direction. this should turn the ring a pinion gears listen and feel it should be smooth all the way around . Hope it's not your gears there about $1200.00 bones for the parts alone.
