Any way to revive a hydraulic lifter?
I've just pulled the cam tower to re seal everything. Upon inspecting the lifters I noticed 3 of them felt a bit soft. Not too much play but the other 5 are rock solid so it's a noticeable difference. The thing that gets me is my lifters were never loud even on cold start up and I've driven my 924s in temps as low as -20C. I can't get lifters this weekend though and I want to get the engine put back together asap as this is my daily. Is it safe to run these lifters or should I wait it out until I get new ones? I did flush one lifter with penetrating oil and let it sit in engine oil and I felt a bit of improvement but still not rock solid.

If they weren’t causing a problem i wouldn’t touch them. There are enough things to fix on our cars without also trying to fix what’s not broken. Put them back like they are and they will likely pump up fine with the engine running.

for 30 years people have been questioning lifters because they are "soft"...which means oil squeezes out when you push on the button by hand, some more than others. and people have been spending silly money replacing them for no reason.
there are no parts inside the lifter to actually wear out, though perhaps the "bleed passages" can be opening up a bit... when the engine is running these things are jammed with 45+ psi of oil pressure and do their job fine. the only way for one of these lifters to actually "fail" would be in a catastrophic event that crushes the lifter so that no amount of oil pressure will pump it up (slightly separate the inner portion from the outer shell)...at that point you probably have valve and camshaft damage too. no reason to ever replace unless the bearing surface the cam rides on is totally wiped out, especially not when they're over $200 EACH new. |

Agree it's fine. Also, I trust you marked them and are putting them EXACTLY where you found them. They wear specifically to the cam lobe and switching them is a bad idea. If the one showed improvement, do the others as well just be sure you get all the cleaner out.
