944s2 brake refurb

Hey all, I recently pulled off the front brakes to my '91 and they're a bit beaten up and corroded. Originally I was just doing rotors and pads and then realized that I was getting some nasty plate lift due to corrosion and couldn't get the new pads in.

Here's a photo gallery of the worse of the two calipers. My question is if visually they look safe to rebuild (ordered the piston kits from our host). Never rebuilt calipers before. My friend managed to get the plates off by welding nuts to the screws (heads had long since ceased to resemble allen? sockets).

I can take photos of different angles when I get back home... at work now and just had these on my phone.

Thanks!!

I wouldn't bother there are so many cheap alternatives out there you could look into getting new OEM replacements or another Turbo's used brakes and there is even the Big brake Kits you could look into...I would do any of the above but waste my money, time and energy on getting those things back road worthy again...which from the looks of it...it doesn't look like those should go back on your car maybe soak them in some type of acid/crud remover solution and see what you have left...they are a real PITA to get back together though (speaking from experience) that is why I suggested to just buy new ones.

Don't mean to sound rude about it....but that is the way I would go.

I would clean them up first and then look at them. If they were working, why not rebuild them?

The screw heads for the plates are usually triple square or torx, not allen.

That really doesn't look too bad. Wire brush it down to bare metal and see what you've got left. If you need new plate kits the part number is 96435195901

Sorry I meant new ones as in new used ones in better shape 👍

Hey PHillary, I saw how expensive brand new OEM replacements were and then looked into a used or rebuilt pair as an alternative. Since those weren't necessarily cheap either I decided to go down the path of doing the rebuild myself as I'd like to learn I realize that rebuilding also isn't cheap given how fast the replaceable parts add up.

I'm pretty sure I've read through a few threads that you've posted on before and concluded that I should do this without splitting the calipers. Seems like it's okay to paint/coat and bake them assembled as well?

Thanks for the part number! Do you happen to know the specs of those screws? The plates look like they're in fine condition and I'd hate to spend another $70 or so on that kit just for the screws.

Yeah...I was just trying to save you some headache...However, I would love to see how they come out and what you do to them....hand-sand/Polish all the light rust off of those pistons so they will slide out and in smooth as butter!
