3.0 Crank in a 89 2.7L 8V (Advice Needed)
Hello,
I just got a brilliant little stock 89 2.7L 944 with just over 100k miles and extensive service records. I'm currently having the Lindsey Racing MAF Kit/Tune fitted to it as well as new spark plugs and a post-purchase service. I expect it will run quite nicely. I would like to add a 3.0 Crank and shorter pistons to effectively build a 3.0 8V Motor. I heard it mentioned but have not found any hard examples and searched everywhere. Anyone info on a build like this would be really appreciated ![]() Thanks! |

I know many will say Turbocharge it, Sell it and buy a 968, or swap in a 968 motor. I would prefer to keep the original engine in the car and keep it naturally aspirated.
My goal is a 200hp/200torque really dependable driver without the complications of the 16v chain etc. that will likely never see a track. I hoped with the 3.0l crank, Tune, Camshaft and an exhaust I could get there or thereabouts. I have also heard people say the 944 8v head is very restrictive and will not get you much more power. Does this also apply to the 2.7L head which I believe is quite sought after? Last edited by mwg968; 04-23-2019 at 03:08 PM.. |

3.0 crank, 2.7 pistons, custom short rods, stock head and cam should make about 200hp at 12:1 compression, hope you've got good gas.
A better camshaft will go a long way towards making power on top of that. Contact broadfoot racing for 3.0 na info, theyve done it. |

I've done several of these. Your approach is to go with custom pistons, stock rods and 3L crank? If so, your rods will hit the pan rail on the 2.7 block. Remedy to to relieve the pan rail for clearance, or to use an aftermarket rod (most all of them will clear). If your head is properly freshened and you have a proper custom tuned chip, you'll easily reach your power goal.

Oh.... agree with V2 that a camshaft will benefit lots.
