Overheating 944 (83)
I'm having alot of trouble with my 944 overheating.
I changed the waterpump, thermostat, thermofan switch, and radiator. I've filled it with 50/50, bled the system and had the heater running, but it still overheats. The radiator stayed cool until I removed the thermostat and then it would just get warm. The hoses all get quite hot but the radiator doesn't get hot enough to turn on the fans. I think I have a blown headgasket(contaminated oil)...can that cause a problem with circulation? Also, how likely is it that the block is cracked instead of a blown headgasket? Engine runs smooth otherwise. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks ------------------ Matt |

I had a problem with overheating in my 84 944 which ended up being a clogged radiator.
Make sure that ALL your cooling components are good (new water pump or a questionable rebuild? possibly a defective thermostat) then make sure that the system is bled completely. As for your contaminated oil, also consider your oil-to-coolant heat exchanger; it is notorious for blowing a gasket. About $40-$50 for a new seal kit and $150-$200 for labor. Hope this litle bit of info helps. |
