Is there ballast in my car?
What is the metal cylinder in the trunk of my s2 cabrio? Its mounted with rubber bushings in the right rear corner.

No, it's got no connections of any kind. It's just a heavy steel cylinder on rubber mounts bolted to brackets. Definitely looks factory.
Any other S2 drivers know? Thanks Dave

Hmm,
PET shows a "Vibration Damper" in that location on a 91 cab. From the illustration it appears to be mounted to brackets with rubber bushings at each end. (sorry don't know how to clip the illustration). Does that sound right? |

Cabrio Vibration Damper.
Dave:
That mass is a vibration damper. Most convertibles have it. My 89 BMW 325 iC has one as well. As a result of the loss of the roof, cabrios have a few additional vibration modes that can be damped out by tuned dampers. I used to tune chassis dampers and bushings for a living a few years ago.
